How to Wear a Midi Skirt for Spring

Wednesday, April 02, 2014

Midi skirts made their first foray into mainstream fashion last year, really coming into their own in the autumn/winter lines, teamed with a pair of trusty 40 denier tights and ankle boots. This style of skirt has proved popular, and looks set to become a long-term wardrobe staple because of its versatility for both work and play. But as the winter comes to an end, and the promise of brighter, warmer days beckons, is there still a place for the midi in spring? Well, don’t hang up this new favourite just yet, as there are many great ways to wear it for the new season, and if you’re yet to try one, why not check out the great range of midi skirts from George at ASDA.

Ditch the tights
Tights are an absolute necessity in the autumn and winter months, and even seeing someone venture out with bare legs makes most people shiver. As the days get a little warmer however, you can afford to let a little more skin see daylight, and a midi is a fab way to find the balance of too much vs. too little. Don’t try to go too summery too soon and keep the footwear sensible in case of chill or showers. Ankle boots look great with bare legs and a midi, and keep you bang on trend during the transitioning seasons.

Go with the flow
Midis in spring are not just restricted to the body con straight fits that have been seen in previous seasons. Why not embrace your girly side and go for a floaty loose fit skirt that finishes just below the knee in a style reminiscent of the 1950s. Team a flowy floral number with knitwear for the perfect mix and match of fabrics that allows a seamless transition from winter to spring, whatever the weather is doing.

Brilliant blouses
A look that’s especially good for the office, as well as a smarter look for the weekend, is to team a midi skirt with a feminine blouse. You can go for short or long sleeves depending on the prevailing weather conditions, and team with a statement necklace for a really striking look. Lighter fabrics look fab with a close fitting skirt, and a billowy blouse will really contrast a tailored bottom half for a great outfit for any situation.

Bold colour-blocking
When a new trend appears, it is easy to play it safe and go with a plain version that will go with other items in your wardrobe. Many women will own a plain black basic midi skirt, but as the flowers start to bloom, you too can start to think about adding a splash of colour. Try a midi skirt in a bright tone, and contrast it with an equally bright top for a brilliant spring look. This combines the trend of colour blocking and the midi skirt, making you a real fashionista when you step out in this outfit.

The midi looks like it is here to stay, and as it can be adapted throughout the year for every season, there is no reason not to make it part of your wardrobe basics. Much more work appropriate than the mini, and less summery than the maxi, this is a cut that has as much versatility as your little black dress.

I really really wish I could pull of midi skirts, but being a total shortie they'd probably just swamp me! x

I really love the look of a flared midi skirt - so chic! I don't know how wearable they'd be for the not-so-elegant me though!
